What Is a Mental Health Disorder?

A mental health disorder is a condition that affects your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. These disorders can make it difficult to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, disrupting relationships, work, and daily life.

Did You Know?

At Deer Hollow, we aim to break the stigma. Struggling with your mental health doesn’t mean you’re weak—it means you’re human. And you don’t have to face it alone.

What Causes Mental Health Disorders?

Mental health disorders don’t appear out of nowhere—they often arise from a mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Understanding what causes these challenges is key to creating an effective treatment plan.

Common Causes of Mental Health Disorders

  1. Trauma and PTSD: Trauma changes the brain’s ability to process emotions and regulate stress. Over 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced at least one traumatic event (National Council for Mental Wellbeing).
  2. Chronic Stress: Persistent stress—common in high-stakes professions like first responders—erodes mental health over time.
  3. Co-Occurring Disorders: Substance use often accompanies mental health challenges, creating a cycle that requires specialized care.
  4. Life Transitions: Divorce, grief, financial stress, or other major changes can overwhelm your ability to cope.

At Deer Hollow, we uncover and treat these root causes, not just the symptoms, giving you the best chance at long-term recovery.

How to Recognize the Signs of a Mental Health Disorder
