What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is a unique, clinically validated form of psychotherapy that views the mind as made up of distinct “parts,” each with its own role and emotions.

For example:

  • Exiled parts often carry unresolved trauma, shame, or sadness.
  • Protective parts aim to shield you from pain but can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms like avoidance or addiction.
  • The Self is your compassionate core, capable of leading the healing process.

IFS therapy helps you understand and build a healthy relationship with all your parts, leading to emotional balance and resilience.

Research has shown that IFS Therapy significantly reduces PTSD symptoms and improves overall mental health (IFS Institute).

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

IFS Therapy is a step-by-step process that helps you address unresolved emotions and develop self-compassion.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Identifying Your Parts: Your therapist helps you identify the various “parts” of your mind and understand their roles.
  2. Building Self-Compassion: IFS encourages you to approach all parts of yourself with curiosity and kindness, even those that seem problematic.
  3. Healing Exiled Parts: The process allows you to access and heal the pain held by exiled parts, releasing emotional burdens.
  4. Restoring Balance: By helping protective parts relax, the Self can take charge, leading to emotional harmony and peace.

Why IFS Therapy Is Effective

IFS Therapy has gained recognition for its effectiveness in treating trauma, PTSD, addiction, and emotional distress. Unlike traditional therapies, IFS does not label any part of you as “bad” or “broken.” Instead, it acknowledges that every part has a positive intention, even if its methods are unhelpful.

The Science Behind IFS Therapy

  • A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that 92% of participants experienced reduced PTSD symptoms after IFS therapy, with 77% no longer meeting the criteria for PTSD diagnosis.
  • Research shows that IFS helps decrease depression and anxiety levels while improving emotional well-being (IFS Institute).
Deer Hollow uses Mind Body Bridging (MBB) to help a group of first responders heal from trauma and addiction, showcasing its expertise in treating first responders and veterans.
