The Effects of Trauma
We all have some form of wounding, often times starting in childhood and getting validated through our lives. This wound causes pain and usually stems from shame, abandonment, fear and feelings of not being safe; anything we would call trauma. Think openly when you think of the word trauma, it can take many forms, not just the obvious. Often times, the subtle events that we minimize can cause the most pain. This pain causes vulnerability and discomfort which ends up acting like a fire that we are afraid to sit in or go near.
Most of us haven’t been taught how to manage our feelings, handle hard things and navigate this suffering. So when we start to feel the emotions, they feel overwhelming, scary and suffocating and we go to great lengths to numb and avoid them. These actions usually make things worse and cause a slew of unhealthy behaviors that become problematic patterns in our lives that take us away from ourselves, the people we care about and our values.
